Ситуація

The Galeota Terminal is a key part of Trinidad and Tobago’s oil and gas infrastructure. Since the 1970s, the facility has processed hydrocarbons from numerous offshore production platforms, giving it a vital role in the country’s energy supply. As part of the Galeota Expansion Project, BP modernised the terminal’s infrastructure and invested in its safe, environmentally compliant, and reliable long-term operation. Alongside condensate processing, the effective treatment of wastewater became an important part of the project.

Industrial facilities generate wastewater with varying levels and types of contamination. This wastewater contains organic compounds, suspended solids, and other pollutants that require reliable treatment. An effective wastewater treatment system protects the environment, ensures compliance with statutory discharge limits, and supports uninterrupted plant operations.

BP required a new wastewater treatment plant for the Galeota Terminal with a treatment capacity of 30 m³ per day. At the same time, the site imposed stringent requirements regarding space, operational reliability, and technical execution. The new system needed to provide a complete treatment process within a minimal footprint and integrate quickly into the existing infrastructure.

PPU Umwelttechnik developed a ClearFox® C-30 containerised wastewater treatment plant for this purpose. The plant incorporates every stage of the biological treatment process within a standard shipping container. This design provides a compact, fully integrated system with short installation times, high operational reliability, and consistently effective treatment performance.

Containerisation is one of the key strengths of ClearFox® technology. PPU installs the complete process technology within 20-foot shipping containers, creating mobile treatment systems that allow for modular expansion. Each container leaves the production facility in Bayreuth as a largely preassembled plug-and-play system. Connections, pipework, tanks, and process components already occupy their final positions. This significantly reduces the installation work required on site.

PPU designs every ClearFox® system around the specific requirements of the individual project. The company combines proven standard modules with a project-specific process design and manages every stage of delivery, from wastewater analysis and engineering through to production and commissioning.

The existing wastewater treatment plant at the Galeota Terminal no longer achieved the required effluent quality. Wear and technical ageing had progressively reduced its treatment performance. This increased the risk of discharge limit exceedances and compromised operational reliability.

BP therefore decided to replace the existing system entirely. The new plant needed to deliver stable effluent quality over the long term while meeting the demanding requirements of an industrial production site.

Industrial wastewater conditions fluctuate throughout the day. Both hydraulic loads and organic pollutant concentrations change continuously. Many biological treatment processes respond poorly to these variations. Unstable biological conditions reduce effluent quality and increase the level of operational supervision required.

The available space at the terminal created an additional challenge. Conventional activated sludge tanks and large sedimentation basins occupy substantial areas and require extensive civil engineering work. The Galeota Terminal therefore required a highly compact solution with exceptional treatment performance relative to its footprint.

Operational safety also played a decisive role. The new wastewater treatment plant needed to operate reliably, remain straightforward to manage, and comply with the project-specific ATEX requirements. Complex control strategies, labour-intensive maintenance, and sensitive process stages did not meet the needs of the project.

The biological treatment stage also required an efficient solids separation process. Following biological degradation, the wastewater still contains biological sludge flocs and other suspended solids. The treatment system must remove these particles reliably to achieve the required final effluent quality.

BP therefore needed a solution that addressed several challenges at once. The plant had to provide reliable treatment, occupy minimal space, maintain low operating costs, and allow rapid installation.

PPU Umwelttechnik supplied a ClearFox® C-30 containerised wastewater treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 30 m³ per day. The plant incorporates every stage of the biological treatment process within a compact containerised system and fully replaces the previous wastewater treatment facility.

The treatment process begins with primary settlement. Raw wastewater first enters a combined buffer and settlement tank. Larger solids settle at the bottom, reducing the load on the downstream treatment stages. At the same time, the tank balances hydraulic peaks. This creates a more consistent feed to the biological stage and supports stable treatment conditions.

The ClearFox® Fixed-Bed Reactor forms the core of the plant. This high-performance biological treatment system uses the proven submerged fixed-bed process. The pretreated wastewater flows through a reactor chamber containing specially developed fixed-bed media.

The carrier media provide an exceptionally large surface area for microbial growth. A stable biofilm develops across this surface and continuously breaks down organic compounds and nitrogen-based pollutants. Fine-bubble diffusers supply the biofilm evenly with oxygen, creating ideal conditions for biological activity.

The biofilm adapts automatically to changing loads. It continuously adjusts to variations in influent conditions, resulting in exceptionally high process stability. Even short-term load peaks have only a limited effect on treatment performance because the biomass remains firmly attached to the fixed-bed media rather than washing out of the reactor.

These characteristics distinguish the ClearFox® FBR from many conventional biological treatment processes. The plant requires neither complex instrumentation and control systems nor constant intervention from operating personnel. As a result, it significantly reduces both maintenance requirements and long-term operating costs.

Following biological treatment, the wastewater enters the ClearFox® lamella clarifier. This stage reliably removes biological sludge flocs and other settleable solids from the water.

The water initially flows downwards through the inlet section before rising evenly through the inclined lamella modules. The plates sit at an angle of 60 degrees, greatly increasing the effective settlement area. As the water rises slowly, the solids move towards the lamella surfaces and slide down the inclined plates into the sludge hopper.

A sludge pump removes the settled solids at regular intervals. Clarified water collects above the lamella modules and leaves the unit across an overflow weir.

The lamella clarifier achieves high sedimentation performance within a minimal footprint. Compared with conventional secondary settlement tanks, it reduces the required installation area by up to 90 per cent. Its compact design makes it ideal for containerised wastewater treatment plants and for use at industrial sites where space is severely restricted.

The clarification section operates with virtually no energy consumption and contains no moving components within the main separation zone. The durable polyethylene lamella plates withstand a wide range of wastewater compositions and support reliable operation over many years.

A final disinfection stage follows the solids separation process. This provides an additional treatment barrier and supports consistent compliance with the required effluent quality.

PPU manufactured the complete ClearFox® C-30 at its production facility in Germany according to the plug-and-play principle. The company installed all pipework, process components, and mechanical equipment during production. This significantly reduced the amount of assembly work required at the destination and allowed the plant to become operational within a short period.

The modular container design also provides long-term flexibility. Additional containers increase the treatment capacity without requiring major modifications to the existing plant. Standardised container dimensions also simplify transport by road or sea and allow the system to move to another location if operating requirements change.

With the ClearFox® C-30, BP received a powerful and compact containerised wastewater treatment plant designed for industrial use. The combination of a biological fixed-bed reactor and a lamella clarifier delivers high treatment performance and exceptional process stability. At the same time, the compact design, low energy demand, and limited maintenance requirements reduce operating costs throughout the plant’s service life.

The project in Trinidad and Tobago clearly demonstrates the strengths of ClearFox® technology. The plant operates without weekly readjustments or unnecessarily complex instrumentation and control systems. PPU tailors the operating and maintenance requirements to each project and provides the necessary documentation for the site personnel.
