Ситуація

Remote worker camps place particular demands on wastewater treatment. This is especially true in the oil and gas sector. Challenging environmental conditions, limited infrastructure and fluctuating operating conditions all interact and shape every process design decision. These were precisely the circumstances surrounding a project in Kuwait. 

An operator runs a worker camp at a remote location in the country. Its sanitary facilities, washrooms and catering areas generate domestic wastewater with a challenging composition every day. The wastewater contains high organic loads and elevated ammonium concentrations. At the same time, both the hydraulic and contaminant loads fluctuate according to camp occupancy. 

The operator therefore required a compact, robust and straightforward treatment plant that would provide reliable long-term performance under local conditions. The system needed a small footprint and rapid integration at the site. An existing wastewater collection tank already served as the central collection point. PPU incorporated this infrastructure directly into the new treatment concept. 

The subsequent use of the treated water also played an important role. Water is a precious resource in Kuwait. Instead of discharging the treated wastewater without further use, the operator wanted to reuse it for irrigation at the site. This objective determined the process design and the combination of treatment stages within the compact, modular system.

The remote location presented challenges for both installation and long-term operation. High ambient temperatures place considerable stress on technical equipment and demand resilient materials that perform reliably under harsh climatic conditions. Spare parts and specialised personnel have limited availability locally, making simple operating procedures particularly important. Complex monitoring, control and maintenance processes would have made reliable operation unnecessarily difficult. 

Significant fluctuations in loading presented a further challenge. Wastewater flows increase during periods of high occupancy, while quieter operating phases temporarily create underloading conditions. The biological treatment stage needed to manage both scenarios while maintaining consistently high performance without continual operator intervention. Conventional biological systems often react sensitively to such variations and require regular operational adjustments. 

The wastewater composition imposed additional demands because organic residues and nitrogen compounds require different biological degradation processes. Organic matter from kitchens, sanitary facilities and washrooms creates a high wastewater load. Elevated ammonium concentrations also require stable biological treatment. Following this stage, the system needs to separate detached biomass and other solids reliably from the treated water. 

The site’s remote location and limited infrastructure offered little scope for large structures or extensive installation work. The operator therefore required a lightweight, easily transportable system with short installation times. The solution also needed to support future expansion if camp occupancy or daily wastewater volumes increased.

PPU Umwelttechnik developed a compact and modular ClearFox® treatment plant with provision for future expansion. The treatment concept combines a biological ClearFox® fixed-bed reactor (FBR) with a downstream lamella clarifier. Both treatment stages are housed in robust HDPE AP tanks, creating a space-efficient solution for above-ground installation. The system also incorporates the existing wastewater collection tank into the treatment process. 

PPU manufactures the AP tanks using rotational moulding. During production, a heated mould rotates around three axes and distributes the molten polymer granulate evenly across its inner surfaces until the complete tank body takes shape. The process produces a seamless tank without welds or structural weak points. This construction provides exceptional stability and lasting watertightness. Available with capacities of 2,250 or 3,500 litres, the AP tanks combine low weight with high structural resilience. 

A pump transfers the collected wastewater into the ClearFox® FBR. Inside the reactor, microorganisms colonise fixed carrier media and form a stable biofilm. The extensive growth surface supports high biological degradation rates within a compact footprint. Fine-bubble diffusers at the base of the tank supply the biofilm evenly with oxygen. 

The biofilm naturally adjusts its microbial composition in response to changing influent loads, stabilising the biological process as camp occupancy varies. The fixed-bed reactor therefore manages both peak loads and periods of reduced flow reliably. It removes organic compounds and nitrogen-based pollutants effectively. Regular manual readjustments and complex monitoring and control systems are unnecessary. 

The biologically treated wastewater then enters the lamella clarifier and flows upwards between the inclined plates. Positioned at an angle of 60 degrees, the lamella plates create a particularly large effective settlement area within a small footprint. Solids settle on the inclined surfaces, slide downwards and collect in the lower section of the tank. The clarified water passes over the upper outlet weir. 

The lamella clarifier contains no moving parts and uses virtually no energy. Its compact design reduces the required footprint by up to 90% compared with conventional settlement tanks. Together with the stable FBR process, it significantly reduces operating and maintenance requirements. 

The operator subsequently reuses the treated wastewater for irrigation at the site. The system therefore combines reliable wastewater treatment with the responsible local use of water resources. Prefabricated modules and preconfigured connections accelerate installation and commissioning. Additional AP tanks provide targeted capacity expansion whenever demand increases. 

The solution meets all the project’s key requirements. It is robust, space-efficient and adaptable. Manufacturing in Germany also ensures a consistently high standard of quality. The remote worker camp in Kuwait now benefits from a dependable long-term treatment system with low and predictable operating costs.

Yes. PPU Umwelttechnik designs every ClearFox® compact treatment plant around the wastewater volume, influent load, required effluent quality and local site conditions. The modular concept is particularly suitable for worker camps, mining sites, construction projects, industrial facilities and other remote locations.

PPU first assesses the daily wastewater volume, peak flows and relevant influent parameters. These include COD, BOD₅, ammonium, nitrogen, suspended solids, pH and temperature. Based on this information, PPU determines the required number, size and configuration of the treatment modules.

The biofilm inside the ClearFox® FBR adapts naturally to changing influent conditions. This allows the biological treatment stage to remain stable during variations in camp occupancy, temporary underloading and short-term peak loads.

PPU incorporates existing collection tanks, primary settlement tanks and pipework into the planning process from the outset. In the Kuwait project, a pump transfers wastewater directly from the existing collection tank into the compact biological treatment stage.

The ClearFox® FBR has low operating and maintenance requirements. Routine inspections focus primarily on the blowers, pumps, aeration system and sludge removal. The lamella clarifier contains no moving parts and requires virtually no energy of its own.

Additional AP tanks provide extra biological or hydraulic treatment capacity as required. This modular approach allows the operator to respond flexibly to increasing camp occupancy, higher wastewater volumes or changing effluent requirements.
